Up until quite recently, the healthcare industry relied on forced air warming blankets: while these blankets did their job by keeping the patients warm, they were noisy and used a great deal of electricity to power the blower motors.
While the industry was aware of these problems, practical and cost-effective solutions were not forthcoming.
That’s when Augustine Biomedical + Design turned to Eeonyx to develop a resistive fabric for use in a heating blanket. Augustine had experimented with many other products and solutions on the market but ended up using EeonTex™ for its unique combination of properties—properties that were developed to their specifications.
After going through an R&D process, Eeonyx delivered a conductive fabric with the thickness of a single sheet of paper that serves as the core of the Hot Dog blankets. From an engineering perspective, the solution is elegantly simple: whereas other heating blankets are forced to use heating coils in the form of insulated wires running through the blanket, in the Hot Dog blanket, the central layer of fabric is the heater.
The resistive fabric offers totally controllable, completely uniform heat with no bulky, uncomfortable wires. It’s a major step up over the old forced-air style heating in that it’s much more energy efficient (80%) and rated as 246% more efficient overall.
Patient comfort is drastically improved as they’re no longer subjected to the constant white noise of the blower motor, and the post-operative environment remains much cleaner as there is no potentially germ-circulating air moving about.
The thinness of the heating layer allows for a very light overall blanket, about the weight of three to four cotton sheets.
Patient are comfortable and hospitals are breathing easier too: a hospital running eight operating rooms will save an estimated $1,900 a year by switching to Hot Dog blankets.
